‘We live in days when, as is proven daily, you are accused of being an anti-Semite if you oppose the genocide of the Palestinians and the ideology that drives it. And, somewhere along the line, “liberals” who supposedly fight for freedom of speech are making the island…,’ Varoufakis said in his statement.
His full statement follows:
‘Last year, my friend Hasan Piker spoke at the Oxford Union. He persuasively analysed the rise of antisemitism, fascism and the dangerous identification of antisemitism with anti-Zionism.
‘Next Friday, Wolfgang Münchau and I were going to host him at a live event at Kings Cross Town Hall in London.
‘Unfortunately, the Starmer government decided to ban Hasan from entering Britain. Why? Without even saying it explicitly, they implied that Hasan is… antisemitic.
‘Welcome to the club, Hasan – your ban reminds me of the events of two years ago, when I was denied entry to Germany for the horrific crime of organising, together with German Jews, a conference with the impermissibly subversive title “For a just peace in the Middle East”.
‘We live in days when, as is proven daily, you are accused of being an anti-Semite if you oppose the genocide of the Palestinians and the ideology that drives it. And, somewhere along the line, “liberals” who supposedly fight for freedom of speech are making the island…’
