The incident, not in any sense an ‘unfortunate’ one but another tragic outcome of gender oppression and domestic violence, occurred shortly before 2am in central Kalamata, at the intersection of Vasilissis Olgas and Kanaris streets. Neighbours who heard the victim’s cries alerted the Hellenic Police.
When officers arrived at the apartment building, they found the 41-year-old man inside the flat covered in blood, while his 39-year-old wife was found dead in the bedroom with multiple wounds caused by a sharp object.
According to initial information, the 41-year-old was arrested in the act, while the authorities are investigating the exact circumstances in which the femicide took place.
Particularly alarming is the fact that the couple’s two minor children, aged ten and six, were also inside the home. The children were transferred to the paediatric clinic of Kalamata Hospital, where they are receiving the necessary care and psychological support.
The Kalamata Criminal Investigation and Prosecution Sub-Directorate has launched a preliminary investigation into the case.
