15 Detained after pro-Palestine protest at the Acropolis – Call for solidarity gathering at Athens Police HQ

Members of the New Left party carried out a pro-Palestine protest on Tuesday morning at the Acropolis of Athens, unfurling the Palestinian flag at the archeological site in a symbolic act of solidarity with the Palestinian people. According to a statement by the organisation, the intervention aimed to show support for Palestine and highlight the global call for a ceasefire and justice. Police intervened shortly after the protest began, detaining 15 individuals.
The group reports that those detained include the New Left Youth Secretary, senior members of its leadership, and four members of its Central Council. In their statement, the New Left condemned the police response as an act of repression, describing it as part of a broader pattern of authoritarianism and suppression of political expression. The organisation laid responsibility directly at the feet of Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
“The detentions will not silence us,” the statement reads, emphasising their commitment to continue spreading “a message of peace that will be heard around the world.”
In response, the group is calling for a solidarity protest outside the Atticac Headquarters of Hellenic Police (GADA), demanding the immediate release of those detained and asserting that “no one can take away our right to peaceful protest.”
