Following the incident, the prison prosecutor was notified and ordered an investigation, leading to the arrest of two prison officers. A forensic examiner and a team from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations were also summoned to the scene, and an autopsy has been ordered.
According to a police statement, “In the evening hours of Friday (25/10) in the Special Health Centre for Prisoners at Korydallos, a prisoner was found hanged. She had been transferred to the facility on 24/10 for psychiatric evaluation following disruptive behaviour.”
The statement detailed that the young woman had initially been sent to a psychiatric hospital, where staff decided she could return to the detention facility. However, early on 25 October, she reportedly experienced further disturbances, leading to her re-admittance to the prison’s health centre. She was to be transferred back to the psychiatric hospital later that day but was found unresponsive in the evening.
This marks the second unexpected death of a young prisoner in Greece within days. A 21-year-old male detainee was found dead in Volos prison on Friday afternoon under unclear circumstances, an event that has sparked unrest among inmates at Volos.
