41-year-old man remanded in custody over New Chalkidona femicide – Denies all charges

A 41-year-old man accused of killing his former partner in New Chalkidona has been remanded in custody. He denies the charges, citing the coroner’s report and CCTV footage which he claims show he left the property before the estimated time of death. The 48-year-old woman was found dead by her son, with signs of a struggle and suspected strangulation.
The incident took place in the early hours of last Saturday. The suspect was arrested on the afternoon of Tuesday, 27 May, by officers from the Northeast Attica Homicide Division, following a warrant issued for his arrest.
He faces charges of premeditated murder committed in a calm state of mind. During his statement before the authorities, accompanied by a court-appointed lawyer, he denied any involvement in the woman’s death.
In his defence, he referred to the forensic report, which places the time of death between 2:30 am and 10:00 am the following day. He maintains he left the flat at 1:30 am, a claim he says is backed by CCTV footage obtained by police.
Addressing the discovery of his DNA under the victim’s fingernails, he argued it was the result of previous consensual contact, not a struggle.
The victim’s body was found by her 20-year-old son, with whom she shared a basement flat on Perikleous Street. He discovered her at around 6:50 pm and alerted the authorities.
Police arrived to find the woman lying on her back in bed. The room was in disarray and the apartment door had been locked from the inside.
The coroner who examined the body said the likely cause of death was strangulation. Investigators also found signs the victim had fought back – she had injuries to her face and the room showed clear signs of a violent altercation.
