The report reveals that someone made alterations to the audio recording, which was illicitly obtained from OSE’s communications recording system. Specifically, To Vima analysed the dialogue of February 28, 2023, and discovered that the prompt, which supposedly authorised the ill-fated train’s departure, was actually associated with a local route, not the train involved in the disaster.

This raises pressing questions: “Who manipulated the stationmaster’s audio, and for what purpose other than to underscore the narrative of human error?” the report prods.

In response, Minister of State Akis Skertsos expressed disdain over the exploitation of the tragedy, condemning the sacrilegious handling of public grief. “Some individuals persist in desecrating people’s grief, as evidenced by today’s To Vima front page, which purports to ‘uncover’ news that ERT and numerous outlets had reported over a year ago,” Skertsos remarked, citing prior coverage by state and other media sources.

This development adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing discourse surrounding the Tempe train disaster, challenging previously accepted narratives and calling for a deeper examination of the events leading up to that fateful night.

Minister of State Skertsos criticises the newspaper report

Minister of State, Akis Skertsos, has expressed his disdain towards To Vima newspaper’s allegations of audio tampering in the Tempe train tragedy. He asserts that the supposed narrative of a ‘cover-up’ falls apart upon closer examination of the article itself. According to Skertsos, the newspaper admits that all audio recordings were submitted to the court by the police and are integral to the ongoing investigations. He accuses the publication of exploiting the tragedy for sensational journalism, muddying the waters rather than shedding light on the truth.

“Our focus remains on supporting the victims’ families and our commitment to seeking justice,” Skertsos emphasised, condemning any attempts to politicise the tragedy.

Syriza demands accountability over alleged audio manipulation

Following revelations of possible audio tampering, Syriza has called for immediate government accountability. The party condemns the New Democracy government’s alleged efforts to obscure the truth of the Tempe tragedy, accusing it of manipulating evidence to deflect blame. Syriza highlights the seriousness of the accusations, urging the government to address unanswered questions regarding the falsification of evidence.

“The government’s silence and denial over the alleged audio editing do nothing but point towards a systematic attempt to mislead the public and protect governmental interests,” stated a Syriza spokesperson, demanding straightforward answers.

PASOK-Movement for Change reacts to newspaper revelations

The PASOK-Movement for Change has reacted strongly to the report, viewing it as further evidence of the government’s attempts to conceal the truth behind the Tempe tragedy. The publication’s findings, which suggest the illegal removal and editing of critical audio evidence, have sparked outrage within the party.

“This incident is indicative of a broader pattern of concealment, corruption, and impunity within the government,” declared a PASOK spokesperson. The party reaffirms its dedication to pursuing justice for the victims of the tragedy and holds firm in its call for a comprehensive investigation into the matter.

These developments have intensified the scrutiny of the government and their handling of the Tempe tragedy, with political opposition parties united in their call for transparency and accountability.
