Father recounts police neglect in daughter’s rape case before her murder
“Eleni had been raped, and after mustering tremendous courage, she went to the police station with three fellow students. They even had a video of the incident, but the on-duty officer dismissed them, demanding they first ‘find the video, find the evidence’ before filing any complaint,” recounted Topaloudis to ERTNews.
He expressed a grim outlook on future cases, questioning whether the response would have been different if the victim were a child of the police officers themselves. Highlighting a deeper issue of negligence, Topaloudis noted that after the murder of an investigator in Rhodes, the officers involved voluntarily offered statements about Eleni’s case, which were previously disregarded. This incident, he suggests, led to a belated charge being filed for the 2017 rape.
Topaloudis extended his condolences to the family of Kyriaki Griva, another recent victim, emphasising the lifelong burden of grief they must now bear. He concluded with a call for a police force that truly serves and protects its citizens.
