The decision has sparked significant concern among the workers, particularly regarding the potential risks of industrial accidents following the removal of specialised staff from the factory. The workers’ union has called for a major rally on Friday, May 10, at 7 p.m. at Syntagma, to demand the reopening of LARCO and the preservation of their jobs.

“The government bears sole responsibility for whatever happens. It chooses head-on collision, even risking mourning a new tragedy, like the one at Tempe,” stated Panagiotis Politis, the President of the LARCO workers’ union in Larymna, in a statement to 902. He criticised the government’s disregard for the profound impact on local communities, the workforce, and their families, especially with the exam period approaching for hundreds of students.

“We call on the government to listen to the proposals of the unions and the workers. We clearly state that we are not going to leave LARCO and our homes. The government will get its answer by escalating our struggle,” Politis added, emphasising the determination of the workers to resist the lay-offs and fight for their rights.

The union is urging a strong turnout for the upcoming rally, calling it crucial in their fight against what they describe as criminal actions by the government.
