Konstantina Dimoglidou, press representative for the Hellenic Police (EL.AS), clarified the regulation in a recent interview with MEGA: “The Highway Code stipulates that drivers should not have their hands occupied with anything else while driving. This is crucial for maintaining full control of the vehicle.”
Dimoglidou emphasised that this is not a new regulation, but rather an existing rule that is being more rigorously enforced. “There has been a lot of talk about coffee recently, but the rule is clear: if a driver is constantly holding a cup of coffee in one hand, they are not able to respond effectively to unexpected situations on the road,” she explained.
When asked whether a driver could be fined €100 for simply taking a sip of coffee while driving, Dimoglidou responded, “I don’t believe anyone has received a fine for this. The rule is about not occupying your hands while driving—whether with a phone, food, or drink. It’s about ensuring that both hands are free to control the vehicle.”
