The man’s body was recovered 21 nautical miles south of the island by a passing vessel involved in a major search and rescue operation coordinated by the Coast Guard. The operation was launched after a migrant boat sank in the area.

So far, 97 people have been rescued from another ship that was present at the time of the sinking. The deceased will be transported to Kaloi Limenes by a Coast Guard lifeboat.

Search efforts continue under the coordination of the Unified Search and Rescue Center, with two Coast Guard vessels, four other ships, and a Navy helicopter combing the area for any remaining missing persons.
