Speaking from Budapest, Mitsotakis described the summit as taking place amid “great geopolitical upheaval,” urging Europe to approach its partnerships from a place of strength. “We cannot approach this transatlantic relationship from a position of weakness,” he stated. “Europe may not be able to change the world on its own, but it can certainly change itself to meet the demands of a rapidly shifting global landscape.”
Mitsotakis pointed to the upcoming European Council discussions on competitiveness as particularly pressing, advocating for Europe to prioritise resilience in both defence and economic competitiveness. “The time has come to ‘wake up’ from our geopolitical naivety,” he stated, adding that Europe must “secure additional resources” to handle evolving challenges in defence and competition.
Concluding his remarks, Mitsotakis underscored the importance of Europe playing an “active role in global solutions,” expressing his hope that European leaders are approaching these issues with the “seriousness and urgency” they demand.
