According to Ethnos.gr, the train’s conductor was unaware of the issue, as no indication of the open door appeared on the train’s system. The problem was only identified upon arrival at the next station, when the train guard informed the conductor.
Train evacuated and taken out of service
Following the discovery, the train was evacuated and removed from service for repairs. Passengers were transferred to the next available train.
The incident has raised concerns about the ageing train fleet. The train involved is one of the oldest still in operation and is part of a group of 14 trains slated for reconstruction under a contract that has faced significant delays. The first upgraded train is now expected to be delivered by the end of the year.
Investigation launched
STASY, the operator of Athens’ urban rail network, confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is underway. Employees highlighted that, according to safety specifications, the train should not have been able to start with an open door.
