"The decision by the US government to introduce sweeping tariffs marks a major shift towards protectionism and a sharp break from the way the global economy has operated for decades," according to Greece’s Minister of National Economy and Finance, Kyriakos Pierrakakis.
Speaking during a parliamentary committee session on financial affairs, Pierrakakis described the move as a fundamental departure from the principles that have shaped international trade.
“These decisions represent a significant divergence from the European Union’s long-standing approach to economic and social progress,” he noted.
Greece, he emphasised, remains committed to free trade. “We firmly believe that a global trade war serves no one’s interests, and we hope this situation will be as short-lived as possible. While the full impact is still unclear, it is certain to be negative. What we are witnessing is not a single event but part of an ongoing and evolving process. Economies around the world will respond in different ways, leading to multiple rounds of escalation before a new economic balance emerges.”
Pierrakakis also stressed that Greece will actively participate in shaping the EU’s collective response.
“With careful planning and a responsible approach, the Greek economy will meet these global challenges head-on.”
