Yiannis Plagiannakos, Secretary General of the Attikon Hospital Workers’ Union, described the severity of the attack on Greek television, saying: “From the blows and the hatred with which he hit her, it seems that he wanted to take her life.”

The incident took place on Monday afternoon, when the man allegedly assaulted his wife with a sharp object, inflicting deep injuries to her right eye, cheekbones and face. Covered in blood and in a state of shock, the woman managed to reach the hospital later that evening, where she was admitted to the emergency department and is now being treated at the maternity clinic.

Doctors confirmed that while the pregnancy remains stable and the fetus is not in danger, the woman faces a risk of losing her sight. “Fortunately, the pregnancy is going well,” said Plagiannakos. “The problem is with her eyes. She underwent a two-and-a-half-hour operation and will probably need further surgery in the coming days, hopefully to save her eyesight.”

Describing the victim’s arrival, he added:

She came to the hospital in an indescribable state. Colleagues on duty were speechless. She was covered in blood, bleeding from her face, eyes and ears. The image was beyond words.”

POEDIN president Michalis Giannakos, speaking to SKAI television, said the attacker’s apparent aim was to gouge out her eyes. “Her body was full of puncture wounds from the violent and repeated blows,” he said.

The woman reported the attack on Wednesday, leading to the man’s arrest. He was brought before the prosecutor’s office on 9 October and has been charged with felony aggravated assault and illegal possession and use of a weapon.

Authorities have not confirmed whether there was a prior record of domestic violence, but reports suggest that the man had previously been of concern to police and was arrested several years ago in another case.
