According to the figures, 65% of Greek households reported a decline in income over the past year, while more than a quarter of the population now lives at risk of poverty or social exclusion. SYRIZA argues that the data expose the government’s policy of favouring oligopolies and windfall profits at the expense of the social majority, describing Kyriakos Mitsotakis’s six years in power as ‘a noose around the neck of society’.
In its statement, SYRIZA-PS described the ELSTAT findings as ‘revealing and indicative of the government’s true performance’.
Citing the report’s key points:
– 65% of households say their income has worsened in the past year.
– The indicator for unmet health needs has risen by almost ten points in a single year to 21.9%, compared with an EU average of just 3.6%.
– 26.9% of the population now lives at risk of poverty or social exclusion, 6% higher than the European average.
‘While the Mitsotakis government continues to admire itself, reality brings it down. Seventy-five per cent of society is dissatisfied, with the cost of living, the housing crisis, the disintegration of public health and the forced impoverishment it has imposed,’ the SYRIZA-PS press office stated.
The party added that ‘excess profits and deals with large business groups and oligopolies are a noose around the neck of the social majority’.
‘This is the legacy of six years under Mr Mitsotakis’s “excellent” people,’ SYRIZA-PS said, calling for ‘a change of course’ through the Progressive Greece plan presented by party leader Sokratis Famellos at the Thessaloniki International Fair.
