As reported by patris.gr, survivors say there were 69 people on the boat that departed from Libya. Of these, 55 were rescued and six bodies have been recovered from the sea. Among the dead are a woman and a child.
There are also reports of a woman and her two children who have not yet been found, heightening fears that the final number of victims may be higher.
The survivors were transferred from Crete last week to Malakasa. Among them are a pharmacist from Sudan, who had been treated for pneumonia in Rethymno hospital, and a young man who underwent surgery for appendicitis in Chania hospital.
