Heavy rain triggered significant damage along the slopes of the Pikrodafni stream, where large volumes of water and debris caused parts of the road surface to collapse. Streets such as Lidorikiou and Tepeleniou suffered extensive subsidence and structural damage.

A joint inspection by municipal and regional authorities confirmed the scale of destruction, leading the General Secretary for Civil Protection, Nikolaos Papaefstathiou, to issue the emergency declaration. The measure allows the municipality to fast-track essential works for the protection of residents and property.

Mayor Stelios Mamalakis welcomed the decision, calling it “a critical development that enables us to proceed rapidly with necessary projects to safeguard our citizens.”

The wider Attica region faced severe weather on the same day, with intense lightning, torrential rain and localised flooding. Mesogeion Avenue and parts of Lavriou Avenue turned into large pools of water, immobilising vehicles and buses. The Fire Service received around 40 calls for water pumping, mostly from the southern suburbs, while authorities responded to isolated incidents of drivers trapped in their cars.

Power outages were recorded in several neighbourhoods, though HEDNO crews worked to restore electricity. Municipal authorities, EYDAP and the Region were alerted to open manholes, and Traffic Police closed streets where necessary to ensure safety.
