MeRA25 responds to Karystianou: individual rights are non-negotiable
“Women’s right to absolute self-determination over their bodies and therefore the right to abortion, without asterisks or conditions, has been won in Greece after decades of struggle and is not up for debate,” the party states.
MeRA25 stresses that individual rights, and the right of every person to decide about their own body and life, are not subject to public consultation or to the principle of majority rule. On the contrary, it argues, democracy exists precisely to protect individual rights from intrusion, whether by a minority or even by a majority.
According to the party, any attempt to reopen this debate, regardless of the guise under which it appears, runs counter to democracy, human rights and individual freedoms.
MeRA25 concludes by stating that it will continue to fight for these rights, underlining that some issues have been definitively settled and should not be relativised.
