In a statement, the party said that, despite warnings from livestock farmers and the experience of previous health crises in the primary sector, the government continues to underestimate the situation and is limiting itself to piecemeal measures and communication management.

It argued that, at a time when the risk of total destruction to a dynamic sector of the agricultural economy is becoming clear, ministers are merely engaging in meetings and telephone calls.

According to the statement, telephone contacts by the political leadership of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food do not amount to crisis management and cannot substitute for a government presence on the ground.

The party said the political leadership should already be in Thrace overseeing the implementation of biosecurity measures, and that reinforcement with veterinary staff should already have been secured.

‘The government proves once again to be below the circumstances,’ the statement said.

‘As in the case of sheep and goat pox, it is once again leaving the primary sector exposed, with livestock farmers paying the price of indifference and incompetence.’
