In a post on social media, Arvanitis denounced the Israeli interception of the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla off the coast of Cyprus.

He also expressed his full solidarity with those who, as he noted, continue to resist the humanitarian catastrophe in Palestine, the killing of civilians and the violation of fundamental rights.

The MEP also criticised the European Union, calling for the immediate imposition of sanctions on the Israeli government and the suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement.

Arvanitis wrote:

‘The interception of the Gaza flotilla by the Netanyahu government, off the coast of Cyprus, another EU member state, is piracy and constitutes yet another flagrant violation of international law and humanitarian principles.

‘Full solidarity with all those who refuse to remain silent in the face of the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Palestine, the killing of civilians and the destruction of fundamental human rights.

‘Token sanctions against Israeli settlers do not save the credibility of the EU. Sanctions should be imposed immediately on the Israeli government and the Association Agreement should be suspended.’
