In its announcement, ESIEA said:

‘The Board of Directors of ESIEA condemns the employer of the KONTRA television station, which unjustifiably placed journalist Nikos Panagiotopoulos on compulsory leave and ultimately led to the termination of their cooperation.

‘The Board of Directors of ESIEA strongly protests against this anti-labour practice and declares that it will defend freedom of speech and stand by all colleagues who adhere to the Code of Ethics of the journalistic profession, in every action they take to defend their labour rights.’

Panagiotopoulos also referred to his departure in a post on social media.

‘Some of you… may look for me on the #KONTRA bulletin. Our daily appointment will not continue. KONTRA… stop. But we will continue to talk daily on #Alpha_Radio_989, every morning from 8:00 to 9:00, you will read me on #Newpost and see me on Vidcast. As for television… never say never. Maybe somewhere, at some point, we will meet again,’ he wrote.
