Her 41-year-old husband, who has confessed to the act, claims that he woke up and saw his wife holding a knife and that, during a struggle, he took it from her and fatally wounded her. However, his claims have not been accepted by the authorities, as he did not have defensive injuries, but only a cut on his finger, which, according to police assessments, is not consistent with self-defence but with the violent attack suffered by the victim.
The Hellenic Police believe that the perpetrator placed the knife in his wife’s left hand to support the self-defence claim, noting that the victim was right-handed.
At the same time, the investigation is also focusing on the couple’s two minor daughters, who were found asleep in their room and, according to the authorities, did not notice or hear anything during the incident.
As part of standard procedure and protocol, doctors at the paediatric clinic of Kalamata Hospital, where the children were transferred and remain, carried out blood tests, as they are examining the possibility that sleeping pills had been administered. Sedatives were also found in a box inside the home, while the children did not wake up either during the intense argument or during the murderous attack that followed.
The parents’ bedroom showed signs of an intense struggle, further reinforcing the evidence of the violence of the attack.
The 41-year-old perpetrator was transferred to the Kalamata courts on Tuesday, 2 June, under strict security measures and in secrecy, where he remained for approximately two hours.
He was brought before the prosecutor on charges of intentional homicide in a calm state of mind, domestic violence and violations of weapons legislation. He was granted a deadline to testify before the investigating judge on Thursday.
According to information, the defence lawyer insists on the self-defence claim, arguing that the woman was the one who attacked first and that the defendant then took the knife from her.
The 41-year-old is expected to testify again on Thursday, while his lawyer called for an end to what he described as ‘people’s courts’ and the dissemination of inaccuracies.
