According to reports citing police sources, the unrest began when officers from the Migration Service arrived to collect the man and take him to the airport for his transfer to the Turkish authorities.
Kurdish prisoners reportedly acted in solidarity with him by setting fire to mattresses in their cells.
A large Fire Service contingent was deployed, while police and prison officers increased their presence both inside and outside the detention facility.
Despite the unrest, the transfer was completed several hours later.
The incident followed unrest at the women’s prison in Thebes on Thursday 30 July, after the death of a 57-year-old prisoner. Inmates set fire to mattresses in protest against the lack of medical care.
