The case concerned an apartment that had recently undergone a superficial renovation but suffered from a serious soundproofing problem. Following the union’s intervention, one of its members was able to leave the property without incurring any additional costs.

The union explained:

‘A member of the union rented a recently but superficially renovated apartment at a very high rent.

‘Before signing the lease, they were not informed of a serious soundproofing problem.

‘By the time they discovered it, everyday life had already become unbearable, and they asked to leave immediately.

‘The landlord demanded the full rent for September and sought to retain the security deposit.

‘Following the intervention of union members, who attended the meeting in support of our member, the demand for additional rent was withdrawn and the landlords signed a statement confirming that they had no further claims against our member.

‘The victory may seem small, but it shows that with collective organising, the balance changes and we can win.’
