In Politika, Evia, firefighters intervened in the early hours of the morning to rescue two people, a 55-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman, both from Israel. Their vehicle had become stuck in mud and debris washed onto the road by the heavy rain.

The operation began at around 3.45am after a call to 112, which enabled the vehicle to be located. Four firefighters with two vehicles from the Psachna Volunteer Fire Brigade were dispatched to the scene.

Firefighters reached the vehicle and transported the two passengers to a safe location in the Kamaritsa area. The operation was completed shortly after 5am.

Flooded homes and crops

The severe weather also caused widespread problems in the municipality of Dirfyo-Messapia. At the entrance to Psachna from the North Evia side, water entered homes, while municipal and regional authorities had been in the area since the early hours of the morning, conducting patrols and monitoring conditions.

Problems were also reported in Triada, where water flooded yards and entered homes, while traffic on main roads became difficult.

Damage was also reported to crops, including lettuce fields, with part of the production destroyed.

On the road connecting Triada with Psachna, fast-flowing water carried mud, soil and stones onto the roadway, covering sections of the road and creating hazards for drivers.

Road to North Evia closed

The heavy rainfall also triggered landslides. According to Evia Deputy Regional Governor Giorgos Kelaiditis, the road to North Evia was closed in both directions because of landslides.

Conditions remain difficult in several areas, with accumulated water and debris continuing to affect road traffic.

Authorities have advised drivers to exercise particular caution, avoid unnecessary travel where possible and reduce speed in areas where problems have been reported.
