The Eurostat indicator measures the proportion of people living in households unable to cover an unexpected but necessary expense using their own financial resources. Such expenses may include emergency medical treatment, major car repairs or replacing an essential household appliance.

Greece was followed by Latvia (43.7%), Bulgaria (42.4%) and Lithuania (41.1%). The Netherlands recorded the lowest rate in the EU, at 15.3%.

The figures mark a significant deterioration compared with 2024, when Greece ranked third in the EU, with 43.9% of the population unable to meet unexpected expenses. The EU average that year stood at 30%.

The increase highlights the growing financial pressure on Greek households amid rising living costs and shrinking real disposable incomes.
