ELEFTHEROS TYPOSA major victory for freedom of the press and democracy A tidal wave of protest over arrests / muzzlings All political parties (minus the Independent Greeks and Golden Dawn), the Union of Journalists of Athens (ESIEA) the Greek Federation of Journalists (POESY) and the European Federation of Journalists condemned the arrest of the ‘Eleftheros Typos’ reporter Despina Kontaraki following the defamation lawsuit filed against the journalist by the MP Rachel Makri of the Independent Greeks party. Following a circular issued by the Chief of the Hellenic Police Force, journalists will no longer face arrest under the ‘flagrant crime’ procedure for accusations of defamation unless it is ordered by the state prosecutor’s office.
