The vice president of the Commission Valdis Dombrovskis, stated that the report has reached the conclusion that Greece is significantly delayed in honouring its obligations and shows serious shortcomings in the controls it imposes at its outer borders. These must be swiftly dealt with by the Greek authorities.

Greece will shortly receive suggestions and proposals by the E.C.

The report, which is based on “on the field” observations has found that Greece shows grave shortcomings in

-The amount of personnel both in police and coast guard

-The quality of the identification process

-The control of the sea borders

-The collaboration with neighbouring countries

The report acknowledges that the Greek authorities are under heavy pressure but it still stresses the fact that they are failing to do what s necessary.

The spokeswoman for the Greek government stated that: “the subject is very serious and finger-pointing is not the right strategy in order to deal with a problem of such historical dimensions. the problem requires the joint action of all European countries”.
