An eyewitness, who happened to be passing by the area, reported seeing sparks coming from the support bollards of a truck that was unloading. The tragic accident occurred around 9:15 AM when the worker was unloading building materials at a construction site and the crane’s arm made contact with high-voltage power lines resulting in the electric shock.

His colleagues quickly placed him in a vehicle and drove him to the Asclepius Hospital, where he was unconscious upon arrival. Unfortunately, despite medical efforts, the 28-year-old succumbed to his injuries.

According to reports from Action24, when construction work is taking place at a building site, the contractor or person in charge must contact the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network (DEDDIE) to temporarily disconnect the power supply, ensuring a safer working environment, especially when heavy machinery such as cranes is being used.

It appears that this procedure was not followed, possibly in an attempt to save time. The Labour Inspectorate has sent a team to investigate the conditions surrounding the fatal accident.

The police in Voula are handling the preliminary investigation and have taken seven workers in for questioning, as they were present at the scene. The contractor is also being sought by the authorities.
