According to witnesses, the police response was particularly violent. Officers surrounded the protesters, beat them and used chemical agents, despite there being no prior attack from the demonstrators. The arrested were then placed in police transport vans and taken to the Athens police headquarters (GADA).

The 23 detainees are accused of violating the new law on the protection of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, as well as disobedience to officials.

The incident occurred shortly before 8 p.m., when members of Rouvikonas hung a banner without warning in front of the monument on Syntagma Square.
