Following the meeting, Doukas said the municipality stood unequivocally with residents and set out three principal demands:
- written guarantees of the structural integrity of all affected buildings, certified by an independent public body
- immediate compensation and repairs in accordance with the law
- the continuation of construction work only under conditions of absolute safety.
Doukas confirmed that 200 homes had been affected.
‘Metro works have currently stopped in this area because of all these issues. […] We knew from the outset, as did the experts, that there were streams beneath the area, that it was particularly sensitive and that additional measurements would be required. They also reminded us that there are 3,000 sensors on and around the metro works so that conditions can be monitored. It was precisely because of the problems detected that work was halted twice, and it has now been suspended again,’ he said.
Doukas also called on Hellenic Metro to establish a single point of contact to respond promptly to residents.
He said the municipality would remain vigilant until safety and calm had been fully restored in the area.
