Speaking outside the courthouse, Doukas said the municipal authority had a duty to immediately forward the findings to the head of the Prosecutor’s Office, as the new evidence had heightened residents’ concerns.
‘The report says there are cases of subsidence four times higher than normal. There are buildings that have turned red, which means there is a high risk,’ he said.
The Athens mayor said the data provided by Hellenic Metro was incomplete, covering only 14 buildings, with no data at all for two of them, while the number of affected buildings is estimated at 24.
According to Doukas, inspections have identified damage to load-bearing structures, making structural assessments necessary to determine the severity of the damage.
The municipality’s three conditions
Doukas reiterated the three main conditions set by the municipality and residents:
- Complete data on the apartment buildings and the Metro station, in order to establish why the problem arose.
- Structural assessments of all buildings, to address residents’ concerns, along with fair remediation wherever problems are identified.
- The safe resumption of Metro works, based on experts’ findings.
Regarding the judicial proceedings, Doukas confirmed that the Prosecutor’s Office has launched a preliminary investigation. The findings of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE), as well as a technical study setting out the conditions under which works can safely resume, are expected in the coming weeks.
