In a statement, the union highlighted growing concerns over ageing trains, understaffing, and a lack of spare parts, calling on authorities to take urgent action to ensure passenger safety.

Union statement: “Workers pray before every shift”

“Every day on Line 1, workers pray that nothing bad will happen during their shift,” the union said in a strongly worded statement. “Serious incidents are occurring one after another.”

The incident on 1 January came just two days after a train emitted smoke at Moschato station. In both cases, workers acted swiftly to prevent a disaster, the statement added.

“The trains are immediately withdrawn and inspected, but we all know that, due to their age, they are likely to experience further issues,” the union warned.

Calls for urgent action

The union is demanding that STASY management and the government take immediate action to address the deteriorating condition of the rolling stock, as well as chronic understaffing.

“Employees are working tirelessly to provide safe public transport despite severe staff shortages across operations and maintenance, a lack of available trains, and outdated facilities that require immediate renovation,” the statement concluded.
