In its statement, the KNE Press Office notes that Papageorgiou merely welcomed the large rally of trade unions in Athens and voiced support for the farmers now mobilising across the country.
According to KNE, conscripted soldiers retain their political rights and “no government, nor any reactionary military regulation, can strip them of them”. It stresses that young conscripts “serve the people, not NATO’s dangerous plans, not the culture of war the government and the EU are trying to impose”.
KNE argues that the authorities’ attempt to intimidate new recruits will fail, as it will face resistance “from farmers, workers, students and the wider public”.
The organisation calls for the immediate cancellation of both the sentence and Papageorgiou’s transfer.
