The statement came in response to the prime minister’s remarks at the European Council summit in Brussels, where Greece, together with France, backed a proposal for a moratorium on attacks on energy infrastructure as a de-escalation measure. At the same time, reference was also made to the EU’s ‘mutual assistance clause’, which the government presented as a way of strengthening European security.

KKE rejects these arguments, saying such initiatives are not aimed at protecting the public but form part of strategies of geopolitical competition. In the same context, it criticises Greece’s participation in military missions, referring among other things to the deployment of Patriot missile batteries in Saudi Arabia.

The party also makes specific reference to military infrastructure inside Greece, arguing that US-NATO bases on Greek soil function as launch points for military operations and do not guarantee security or stability.

At the same time, KKE attacks the government’s economic policy, linking wartime developments to worsening living conditions. It says the measures presented as ‘targeted’ do not address the rising prices and energy burden already faced by households.

In this context, it raises demands including the abolition of VAT on basic consumer goods, cuts to energy taxes, a cap on fuel prices, and higher wages and pensions. It also criticises the new collective agreement in the food sector, which, it says, the government is presenting as a positive development.

Finally, the party comments on the prime minister’s references to the handling of Greek citizens in war zones, arguing that serious issues remain unresolved, including the presence of seafarers in dangerous areas.
