The KKE accused the government of not only maintaining Greek military deployments abroad, including in Saudi Arabia and the Red Sea, but also intensifying the country’s involvement by sending frigates and fighter jets.
Criticism of Cyprus deployment
The party rejected the government’s argument that the measures are intended to defend Cyprus, describing this claim as a ‘huge and shameless lie’.
According to the KKE, the real role of Greek forces on the island would be to protect British military bases and NATO infrastructure, which it said were historically linked to the Turkish invasion and occupation of Cyprus.
The statement also referred to comments by the government spokesperson about Greece’s possible inclusion under France’s ‘nuclear umbrella’ and the risks faced by Greeks in the Middle East.
The KKE said these remarks demonstrate what it described as unconditional support for US and NATO plans in the region.
Call for mobilisation and closure of bases
The party warned that as long as the government continues to provide military bases and infrastructure to support operations in the region, the risk of Greece becoming a target of reprisals will remain.
It called for a ‘popular uprising’ to demand the closure of foreign military bases in Greece, including those in Souda in Crete, Alexandroupoli and Larissa.
The KKE also called for the withdrawal of the Greek Patriot missile battery deployed in Saudi Arabia and the return of Greek navy frigates, F-16 fighter jets and other military assets from the region.
‘The imperialists’ war is not our war. It is in the interest of the Greek people to strengthen the struggle for Greece’s disengagement from the war,’ the statement said.
