Three 4×4 agricultural vehicles were used to transport 51 people from the isolated beach, one of them driven by the mayor of Kantanos-Selinos, Antonis Perrakis.
Early on Sunday morning, the 51 people were transported to the port of Paleochora after their boat ran aground at Anydroi, on the road to Gialiskari, in the municipality of Kantanos-Selinos.
Speaking to ERT Crete, Perrakis said that the need to transport the group immediately to the port, combined with the difficult access to the beach, made it necessary to mobilise three 4×4 agricultural vehicles.
Two trips were required to transport all 51 people from the beach to Paleochora. Perrakis himself drove one of the vehicles.
Among the refugees and migrants, who said they were from Bangladesh, Somalia and Afghanistan, were two women and an infant.
Meanwhile, Frontex and Hellenic Coast Guard vessels had already docked at the port of Paleochora, carrying a further 131 refugees and migrants who had been rescued overnight in the sea area south of Gavdos.
Those rescued are expected to be transported by bus to the informal detention facility in Agia, Chania.
