Hospital employees said the administration had been warned of the equipment failure the previous day but took no preventive action or prepared an emergency plan. The KAT Employees’ Union called the incident “dangerous and unacceptable”, blaming chronic underfunding and lack of maintenance in Greece’s public health system.

In response, SYRIZA MP Elena Akrita and eleven colleagues submitted a parliamentary question demanding answers about the absence of an operational plan, the condition of hospital equipment and the accountability of the administration.

The union noted that the failure occurred only weeks after the health minister celebrated the renovation of the hospital’s emergency department, while parts of the building were still prone to flooding and collapse. “Patients have bracelet IDs but no access to essential equipment,” the union said, accusing the government of treating health as a cost rather than a right.

The opposition is calling for an investigation into administrative negligence and a full audit of hospital infrastructure, warning that systemic decay in public healthcare is endangering patients across Greece.
