Disabled passenger denied boarding by Sky Express: Outcry over discriminatory treatment

In a statement, the Greek Confederation of Disabled People expressed their outrage over Sky Express’s refusal to accept the valid and legal documentation for the wheelchair of a Paralympic medalist, which led to her being denied boarding. The Confederation called this a clear case of discrimination that violates the fundamental right to free movement and equal treatment.
The incident involved a bronze-medal-winning Paralympian with a mobility disability who uses a wheelchair. In January 2025, she booked a flight for an April trip to Istanbul. While the airline for her return journey accepted the necessary documentation for her wheelchair, Sky Express refused without offering any explanation.
The Confederation also pointed out the significant impact this refusal had on the individual involved. Not only did it result in financial hardship, as the agency does not offer refunds, but it also caused considerable emotional distress.
“Even after repeated submission of certificates proving that the wheelchair’s batteries meet safety standards (Regulation A67), the airline continued to deny boarding.”
“Such discrimination and exclusion are unacceptable. Despite several attempts and strong evidence, the airline has maintained an unjustifiable position, causing both financial and emotional harm to the individual and her companion.”
“Sadly, this is not an isolated incident but highlights the urgent need for stricter enforcement of accessibility regulations by airlines to ensure that no one faces such exclusion again.”
