Engine drivers issue legal notice to Hellenic Train calling for justice and safety reforms

The engine drivers' union (PEPE) will participate in the nationwide strike on 28 February, 2025, marking the second anniversary of the Tempe railway disaster. They have sent a legal notice to Hellenic Train, notifying the Hellenic railways organisation (OSE) as well, demanding justice for the Tempe tragedy, significant upgrades to safety measures, full implementation of train control systems, and other improvements.
Key quotes from the engine drivers’ legal notice:
“We hereby inform you that, following a decision by the Board of Directors of PEPE, we will proceed with a 24-hour strike on Friday, 28 February, 2025, involving all train drivers across the country.”
“We strongly protest that, two years after the tragic accident in Tempe, we continue to witness rail accidents caused by the ongoing lack of maintenance, which is a direct result of underfunding and understaffing within the railway sector.”
“We demand justice for Tempe, substantial upgrades to safety measures, the immediate and full operation of train control and signaling systems across the entire network, and the completion of critical infrastructure projects (ETCS, signaling, remote control).”
“We call for continuous maintenance of the railway infrastructure and the immediate removal of natural obstacles, such as tree trunks, which pose a safety risk to workers and passengers.”
“Negligence by Hellenic Train and other involved agencies continues to put both workers’ and passengers’ lives at risk every day. We demand immediate action to prevent further loss of life.”
“During the strike, train drivers will remain available to maintain one-third of usual operations, as required by law.”
