Severe rainfall battered the Cyclades yesterday, leaving roads and homes in Paros and Mykonos submerged. Paros was particularly affected, suffering extensive damage, especially to its road network, with landslides, flooding, and sections of roads collapsing.

According to the Fire Service, roads in the Naoussa area and Kolympithres on Paros were inundated, with floodwaters carrying debris and sweeping away parked vehicles.

The Municipality of Paros also issued a statement warning that landslides, flooding, and collapsed road sections had made travel dangerous. The Fire Service reported that two people were rescued from their vehicles near Naoussa and taken to safety. As of the latest update, there were no reports of missing persons.

The Fire Service’s Operations Centre received dozens of calls for water pumping assistance. A fire service helicopter attempted to reach the island but was unable to land due to the heavy rain.

Meanwhile, in Mykonos Town, a fierce hailstorm was followed by torrential rain, leading to severe flooding in the narrow streets. The floodwaters turned into torrents, carrying away cars. The Operations Centre of the Fire Service received at least 100 emergency calls on the island.

The downpour also caused short circuits and power outages. In Mykonos Town, homes were flooded, and the force of the water created cascading waterfalls. The floodwaters dragged vehicles through the streets, with one car getting stuck in a narrow alley. The water level reportedly reached 70 centimetres.

Emergency weather bulletin from the National Meteorological Service (EMY)
