Michaloliakos, who had been convicted of leading a criminal organisation responsible for numerous violent acts, was released under beneficial sentencing provisions. This decision comes despite his historical and continuous leadership in criminal activities dating back to 1978, culminating in the murder of antifascist rapper Pavlos “Killah P” Fyssas, which led to Michaloliakos’ arrest.

The statement from the Fyssa family lawyers highlights the contradiction in the Greek justice system’s decision, noting Michaloliakos’ unrepentant stance and his declaration of pride in his neo-Nazi beliefs shortly after his initial conviction. These beliefs, as recognised by the court, motivated the violent actions of Golden Dawn against political and ideological opponents, as well as immigrants.

The appellate process is ongoing, and while the victims continue to seek justice, the decision to release Michaloliakos has been seen as challenging their endurance and testing the resolve of Greek society against neo-Nazi ideology. The lawyers also expressed hope that the highest prosecutorial authorities will intervene appropriately, referencing the prosecutor’s initial proposal against Michaloliakos’ release, which the judicial council did not accept.

The lawyers, Theodoris Theodoropoulos, Chrysa Papadopoulou, Eleftheria Tombatzoglou, Marina Daliani, and Argyris Syrigos, call for procedural actions to reconsider the decision of Michaloliakos’ release, emphasizing the need for justice and accountability in the face of extremist violence that has impacted so many lives in Greece.
