In a public statement, Tsipras said Greece’s first priority should be to respond to Cyprus’s request for assistance in protecting the security of its population.

‘Greece’s first priority is to respond to Cyprus’ request for support for the defence and security of its citizens,’ he said.

At the same time, he argued that the current situation raises broader strategic questions about how Greece safeguards its interests.

‘Those who today speak highly of Hellenism should consider whether its security is served by taking the lead on war fronts, seeking protectors, or through peace initiatives and alliances,’ Tsipras said.

Warning against deeper involvement in the conflict

Tsipras stressed that Greece and Cyprus should not become part of a wider war that he said is being waged ‘in flagrant violation of international law’ and aimed at controlling Iran’s energy resources.

He also called on the United Kingdom to explain the involvement of the British military base in Cyprus in US operations, arguing that its participation without prior warning puts the island’s security at risk.

Criticism of the European Union

The former prime minister also criticised the leadership of the European Union, saying it has failed to push for a diplomatic solution regarding Iran’s nuclear programme.

According to Tsipras, the EU has been watching developments ‘with embarrassment’ while taking no meaningful initiatives.

He added that the situation demonstrates the limits of the EU’s claims about common European defence.

‘The great declarations about common European defence prove to be empty words, especially when it concerns not Ukraine but Cyprus,’ Tsipras said.
