The call for the Antifascist Performing Arts Festival 2026 reads:
‘Antifascist Performing Arts Festival in defence of the Community of the Occupied Prosfygika | Thursday 18 to Sunday 21 June 2026 | Prosfygika, Alexandras Avenue
The Antifascist Performing Arts Festival returns from Thursday 18 to Sunday 21 June 2026 to Prosfygika on Alexandras Avenue, 12 years after the unforgettable evenings of the summer of 2014. This time, however, it returns not only to celebrate free life and community, but also as a call and a gesture of solidarity in the struggle to defend the Community of the Occupied Prosfygika.
The Alexandras Avenue Prosfygika is a listed complex of eight apartment blocks with a total of 228 flats, protected for its historical, cultural, socio-political and architectural significance. Today, the Community of the Occupied Prosfygika is a model housing squat that combines features of social housing and self-organised community life, hosting more than 400 people from different countries, including families, elderly people, refugees, migrants and locals.
In the summer of 2025, in the absence of all residents and in clear disregard for their very existence, a programmatic agreement was signed between the Ministry of Culture, the Region of Attica and the Public Employment Service (DYPA) for the “rehabilitation” of four Prosfygika apartment blocks, with the stated aim of using them as “social housing”. However, behind the showcase of “public benefit” lies an eviction with a signature and a stamp.
By naming it “social housing”, three institutions are joining hands to turn housing into a commodity. With ambiguity used as a tool of disorientation, the plan remains hazy: the more vague the benefit, the easier it becomes to hand the space over to business interests.
But Prosfygika is not real estate for development or commercial exploitation. It is a self-organised neighbourhood, a living community ready to defend to the death its survival, collective joy, dignity and freedom, and for this it has the support of all of us.’
