The incident occurred on Agios Dimitrios Street, at the intersection of Agios Dimitrios and Ifaistionos streets, in the Municipality of Thessaloniki. According to reports, a section of the pipeline ruptured as work was concluding, during the phase in which air was being released and water was being introduced into the line. The burst reportedly sent debris flying, injuring three workers, while a fourth worker was thrown into the air by the force of the water. All four suffered fractures to their limbs.

The injured workers were transferred to Hippocrates Hospital. Three were treated and discharged, while a fourth will remain in hospital and undergo surgery after sustaining a fractured leg. Later reporting said two workers remained hospitalised and two, who were more lightly injured, were released after receiving care.

The works were part of a broader water management project linking Thessaloniki’s two main water supply sources, Aliakmonas and Aravissos, intended to serve areas including Sykies, Ano Poli, Eptapyrgio, Xirokrini, Ampelokipi, Menemeni and Neapolis.
