The development follows communications between the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, and French President Emmanuel Macron. According to the report, the two leaders held two telephone conversations on Monday during which Christodoulides requested military support.
Macron reportedly informed the Cypriot president that France would deploy anti-missile and anti-drone defence systems to the island, along with a frigate, while a second French frigate is expected to be sent at a later stage.
According to the same report, Christodoulides also requested the deployment of a frigate from Germany during a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Monday.
Merz is said to have responded positively to the request, with a formal decision from the German government expected soon.
