In a poll conducted by firm GPO on behalf of newspost.gr, opposition party SYRIZA gathered 24.2 per cent of the vote intent in Athens’ second electoral district, which is the biggest constituency in Greece.

The governing coalition’s senior partner, New Democracy, trailed at 17 per cent.

Golden Dawn, a neo-Nazi party, whose leader has been jailed on charges of participating in a criminal organization, comes in third at 8.2 per cent, still above a June 2012 election result of 6.4 per cent . Before the government crackdown on Golden Dawn at the end of September, they had polled as high as 15 per cent.

PASOK, the socialist party which is part of the governing coalition and was one of the stalwarts of the Greek political system, has seen its influence wane even further. According to GPO, PASOK lost over half of its support compared to the June 2012 elections where it fared epically badly. It now polls at a measly 4.1 per cent.

New Democracy fared better in the first Athens district, coming in first at 21.2 per cent with SYRIZA coming in a close second at 20 per cent.

Other than Golden Dawn and the Communist party, all other political parties represented in parliament are faring worse than their June 2012 elections results.  Undecided voters were at 20 per cent.  Most voters polled expressed negative views for New Democracy MPs. The two most popular SYRIZA MPs were both former members of the PASOK party.
