The additional funds will come from the 4 billion euros set aside for the countries most affected by the financial crisis, as agreed when the 2014-20 period budget plan was drafted.

The Greek newspaper Kathimerini reported the announcement should be made on Thursday. The main recipients of the 4 million euros are expected to be the countries of the European south, such as Spain and Italy.

Initially, Greece stood to collect EU funds of 20.4 billion euros in the current funding period, which however, had not been calculated taking into account the major recession that started after 2009, when the country’s gross domestic product was about 25% above the current level. Therefore the total funds Greece will have at its disposal by end-2020 will come up to at least 21.3 billion euros once the 860 million is added.
