Greece records second highest unemployment rate in EU at 10.2% in March
Particularly concerning is the high unemployment rate among the under-25s in Greece, which stands at 21.1%, ranking the country fourth after Sweden, Spain, and Portugal. This high percentage reflects ongoing challenges in the labour market for young Greeks.
However, Greece shows more favourable statistics in terms of gender disparity in employment. The unemployment rate among women is significantly lower at 7.2%, indicating a relatively better position for female workers compared to their EU counterparts.
Overall, the unemployment scenario across the European Union and the Eurozone shows varied trends. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for the Eurozone in March 2024 was 6.5%, remaining steady from February 2024 and showing a slight decrease from 6.6% in March of the previous year. The broader EU unemployment rate was recorded at 6%, a slight improvement from 6.1% in February 2024, and stable compared to the same month in the previous year.
Eurostat’s report estimates that approximately 13.258 million people were unemployed in the EU, with 11.087 million of these within the Eurozone as of March 2024. This represents a decrease of 74,000 in the EU and 94,000 in the Eurozone from February 2024. However, compared to March 2023, there has been an increase of 175,000 in the EU, while the Eurozone saw a decrease of 51,000.
Youth unemployment remains a particular concern, with 2.858 million young people (under 25) unemployed across the EU, including 2.259 million within the Eurozone. The youth unemployment rate was 14.6% in the EU and 14.1% in the Eurozone, showing a slight improvement from the previous month.
Despite these challenges, there was a decrease in youth unemployment by 11,000 in the EU and 30,000 in the Eurozone compared to February 2024. Yet, year-on-year figures indicate a rise in youth unemployment by 150,000 in the EU and 36,000 in the Eurozone since March 2023.
In gender-specific terms, the unemployment rate for women in the EU stood at 6.4% in March 2024, consistent with February’s figures. For men, the rate improved slightly to 5.7%, down from 5.8% the previous month. In the Eurozone, the rates for women and men were 7.0% and 6.0%, respectively, showing a marginal increase for men from the previous month.
