Greece’s new Migration Minister states the government decides who comes, for how long and under what conditions

From day one, Greece’s new Minister for Migration and Asylum, Makis Voridis, has made his stance clear. He affirms that those entering legally must respect Greece’s traditions, values, and cultural heritage.
“I have firm, clear, and strong ideological views on migration. I believe these views were reflected today in the PM’s address to the cabinet. The directive is to do everything necessary, to the fullest extent possible, in order to tackle illegal migration. This means organising returns in the most effective way. This is a major discussion across Europe,” stated Minister Voridis.
“The issue of managing illegal migration is now more pressing than ever, and we have a series of actions ahead of us that need to be implemented,” he added. “This is also about our stance at a European level. We have significant challenges ahead. It is evident that societal attitudes towards illegal migration are shifting.”
Speaking about legal migration, he emphasised:
“Legal migration means that we decide who comes, from where, how many, for how long, and under what conditions. Those who enter our country legally must live in accordance with our traditions, respect our values, our identity, our cultural heritage, and the country that hosts them. These are the principles guiding legal migration, and in the coming period, our discussion will centre on these key ideological and political foundations.”
